How to Choose the Right Shingle Color for Your Richmond Home

February 19, 2024

The Greater Richmond area is home to some of the most diversely beautiful styles of homes in Central Virginia. With such a rich historic background, one can find homes of all styles and eras from the Fan and MuseumDistrict, to historic Ginter Park, the classic suburban homes of Midlothian and Short Pump, and more! This can also complicate things when attempting to choose a shingle color for your home! Here we break down some items to keep in mind to keep the integrity of your curb appeal and to ensure a long-lasting beautiful roof.

Landscaping:

Do you live in a mature neighborhood with lots of beautiful trees hanging over your home? Sounds gorgeous! But all the dirt and grime from those trees, their tannins, and more will show on a lighter shingle, so it’s best to head in a darker direction.

Climate:

Dark colors absorb heat, and light colors reflect it. While the best protection against heat loss and gain in your home is sufficient insulation, the color of your shingles can affect attic temperatures by up to 40 degrees.Did we dash your dream of a gorgeous dark-colored roof? Don’t fret just yet. We also offer attic insulation services that can help make that dream a reality!

Neighborhood Standards and HOA’s:

Don’t forget to check with your neighborhood Home Owners Association or Historic District to ensure the changes you’d like to make are within the neighborhood bylaws. This is also a great place to gain some insight into what may look great on your home! Choose a color or blend consistent with what others in your area are using. This is especially true when homes are close together, near the road, and/or have few large trees in front or around them.

Try a Shingle Manufacturer’s Visualizer Tool:

CertainTeed has prepared a suite of design tools including ColorView which allows you to either select an image that looks similar to your home in their gallery of options or even upload a photo of your home and start designing and seeing the color options that will work best for your home.

GAF Roofing also has the same technology as CertainTeed through their Virtual Remodeler tool.

Get Samples to Try with Siding and Trim:

Similar to flooring, upholstery, and other interior materials, individual shingle samples, and sample boards are available from Tredegar Construction. These samples allow you to see what the shingle looks like next to your siding, gutters, shutters, and house trim.
