Glenburnie

Richmond, VA

Project Request: The homeowners had an old, crumbling Hendricks tile roof, aluminum siding over the original layer of wood siding, and original, single pane, steel casement windows. The home was a Tudor cottage style that was built in 1941 in the Glenburnie neighborhood of the City of Richmond. They wanted to replace their roof, siding, windows, and gutters in a manner that would blend with the existing charm of Glenburnie.

Project Details

This was a great opportunity for the homeowner to not only give an amazing upgrade to the appearance of their home but dramatically improve its energy efficiency.
  • For the steep slope roof areas, the homeowners chose Unfading Classic Black Slate with copper flashing from The Virginia Slate Company. When the old roof was torn off, high temperature ice/water shield was installed over the entire roof area since slate installation is much slower than asphalt shingles. This would keep the house good and dry, but it eliminates the breathability of the roof. To solve this problem, we installed a vented copper ridge cap. Not only does the attic now have improved ventilation but it gives the roof ridge a handsome finish.
  • For the lower sloped roof areas on the sides of the home, we installed 1 inch standing seam Snap Lock metal panels from Sentrigard Metal Roofing Systems. The panels were 24 gauge with Kynar coated galvalume steel in Matte Black.
  • The homeowners considered a number of different siding styles, but landed on a classic lap siding by James Hardie with TruExterior’s Boral trim. They had a painter paint all the primed Hardie siding and Boral trim to match the new addition that was recently completed.
  • The replacement of the old single pane, steel casement windows was probably the biggest improvement they could make for their home’s energy efficiency. The new Pella Reserve casement windows with black aluminum cladding on the exterior and wood on the interior look amazing! The Low-E glass and Argon gas will work wonders for their power bill.
  • For the gutters, we increased the size from 5” to 6” gutters with 3x4 downspouts to handle the stormwater from such a steep sloped roof. The bronze color looks just like the brown patina that you see from copper gutters at a fraction of the price. Finally, the Xtreme Gutter Guards mean the homeowners no longer have to worry about cleaning out those gutters. Great choice!

Final Results

This was an awesome transformation with a new slate roof with copper flashing, Hardie lap siding with Boral trim, and Pella Casement window. We loved working on this project!
